On March 11, the newly established Calligraphy Club, founded by 12th graders Ezra Yu and Matthew Yu, held its first session in the science classroom.
Ezra Yu shared that his passion for calligraphy began during the COVID-19 lockdown in China. When he first got a calligraphy book and some brushes, he was immediately captivated by the art. Over the years, he honed his skills through various online resources and became proficient in the craft. However, after coming to Olivet Academy, he rarely practiced calligraphy except for special occasions like writing birthday cards or participating in school events.
Recently, after being encouraged to spend more time with his peers instead of focusing solely on academics, Ezra recalled how many students had shown interest in his calligraphy work. This inspired him to take action—he reached out to school staff, gathered supplies, and carefully planned the formation of the Calligraphy Club.
After nearly two months of preparation, the club has finally begun! Ezra hopes that through this club, he can cherish the limited time he has with his fellow students, build meaningful relationships, and grow as a leader. He also sees this as an opportunity to relax and enjoy moments of creativity rather than always being so serious.
Although the first lesson didn’t go exactly as he had planned, Ezra found peace in embracing the moment rather than forcing everything to go his way. The club members also showed remarkable progress—most were complete beginners, but by the end of the session, many had already grasped the basics of upstrokes and downstrokes.
Ezra Yu looks forward to seeing how God will use this club to impact not only himself but also Olivet Academy and his fellow members.
