Olivet Academy’s 11th graders conducted their first chemistry experiment on Septembe 17th, marking an exciting milestone in their science education. After eagerly anticipating hands-on activities, the students finally observed chemical reactions in the lab, beginning with small-scale experiments.
Before starting, all students received instruction on proper safety protocols, ensuring they wore goggles, gloves, and appropriate lab attire. Their first experiment, titled “1+2+3 = Black,” involved observing how Potassium iodide, Copper(II) sulfate, Sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, starch, paper, and cereal react with one another. The use of Potassium iodide and Sodium hypochlorite to test for starch served as a practical example of qualitative analysis.
As the reactions produced various color changes, the classroom was filled with awe and excitement. Students frequently exclaimed, “Wow!” and “Cool!” as they witnessed the visual transformations. One student shared, “Doing the experiments really helped me understand chemical changes better through visual and hands-on learning.
Teacher Joyce noted the students’ enthusiasm and growing curiosity about chemistry, with many asking deeper questions about the subject. She expressed hope, along with a prayer request, that improved facilities and equipment will further enhance the students’ science learning experience in the future.
