Faculty members from Olivet Academy Amenia Middle and High School gathered on February 13 to review midyear MAP Growth Winter assessment data and refine instructional priorities for the remainder of the academic year.
Following an opening prayer, Middle and High School Boarding Director P. John Vivian led the professional development session.
Focus of the Session
The primary objectives of the meeting were to:
- Interpret MAP Growth reports
- Identify strengths, gaps, and trends in math, reading, and language usage
- Review middle school science results
- Develop actionable instructional strategies
The assessments, administered during the first week of February, provided midyear insight into student growth. Teachers used the associated scale scores to guide instructional planning and adjustments.
What Are Students Ready to Learn Next?
Faculty members were encouraged to view the midyear data as an “instructional checkpoint” — a tool to answer the key question:
What are students ready to learn next?
MAP Growth data helps teachers:
- Connect performance to state learning standards
- Strengthen Tier 1 core instruction
- Implement MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports)
- Provide Academic Intervention Services (AIS) for students needing additional support
- Adjust curriculum pacing as necessary
Teachers were reminded that data itself is neutral. The focus should remain on improving instruction and identifying class-wide patterns before concentrating on individual outliers.
Discussion and Instructional Adjustments
The session emphasized that this meeting marked a point for instructional adjustment, not simply remediation.
Faculty members examined:
- Whether students are on track for spring growth
- Standards requiring reteaching or extension
- Opportunities for flexible grouping
Teachers reviewed class averages alongside national norms, including growth comparisons from Fall to Winter. They were asked to identify:
- One area of strength
- One area of concern
- One surprising trend
Content and grade-level teams collaborated to analyze student skill mastery and readiness across math, reading, language usage, and science.
The session concluded with teachers clarifying instructional priorities and identifying measurable evidence that would indicate success. Each faculty member committed to at least one instructional adjustment to implement within the next two weeks.
